Titration: definition

Blog · Updated September 26, 2026 · By the team building Embera

Short answer

Titration means starting a medication at a low dose and increasing it step by step until reaching the dose that works. GLP-1 medications are titrated, usually every 4 weeks, mainly to reduce digestive side effects like nausea.

Titration, or dose escalation, is how GLP-1 treatment usually starts. The prescribing information for Wegovy starts at 0.25 mg a week, and for Zepbound at 2.5 mg a week, each for 4 weeks, then increases in steps.

Why go slowly: digestive side effects are more common while the dose is going up. Small steps give your body time to adjust. If a step is hard to tolerate, prescribers can wait longer before the next increase.

Your titration schedule is decided by your prescriber.
