GLP-1 pens are sensitive to temperature. Here are the storage rules from the labels, and how to handle trips.
Storage at home
| Pen | Before use | Out of the fridge |
|---|---|---|
| Wegovy | Fridge, 36 to 46°F | Up to 28 days at 46 to 86°F, before removing the cap |
| Ozempic | Fridge, 36 to 46°F | After first use: 56 days at 59 to 86°F, or in the fridge |
| Zepbound | Fridge, 36 to 46°F | Up to 21 days at up to 86°F |
| Mounjaro | Fridge, 36 to 46°F | Up to 21 days at up to 86°F |
For all of them: do not freeze, and do not use a pen that has been frozen. Keep pens in their carton or with the cap on to protect them from light. Always check the leaflet for your exact product, as details can differ between presentations.
Travel basics
- Carry-on only. The hold can get very cold, and bags get lost.
- Keep them cool, not frozen. An insulated case with a cooling pack works, but do not let the pen touch a frozen pack directly.
- Watch the heat. A car in summer can go well above 86°F within minutes.
- Bring enough, plus a little extra in case of delays, and check your run-out date before you leave.
- Keep your prescription details with you.
Flying
TSA allows medically necessary liquids and cooling packs for medication in carry-on bags. Tell the officer at screening. For international trips, check the rules of the country you are visiting, and time zones if you want to keep your shot day. Changing your shot day has its own rules: see the best day for your GLP-1 shot.
